There are soundtracks which play in the background noise of my mind, occasionally surfacing to remind me of how good they are, especially in tandem with the work they represent. Lately it has been the Turn A Gundam and Big O soundtracks. I'm not a big anime guy. I watched what Toonami told me to watch. I'm only superficially aware of some shows not aired on that channel when I watched regular TV. There's a heck of a lot of Japanese cartoons I've never heard of and probably wouldn't watch. The Japanese take their cartoons seriously and present complex concepts via the medium. They can get pretty deep, and there's usually a lot of culture clash which takes you out of it.
I still recommend watching the two seasons of Big O. Big O has a very mysterious, melancholic feeling of dread throughout. The music is haunting and like I said, echoes in my mind, most likely reinforced by recurring themes modified in subtle ways throughout the soundtracks of both seasons.
I think you have to be a fan of Gundam to engage in any of that series though I recommend starting with the original 1979 series, if you are interested. The English dub is probably floating on those sites bookmarked.
Here is Toonami's trailer for the original 1979 Gundam series. It's pretty awesome. If you don't like it, then you probably would be extremely bored by the downtime between action bits in the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYY8OOK8P_Q
