DASS 77: R2 - BIG C*CK

  1. Don't feel bad about the name you chose. Boisterous Kevin Smiths like R2 are a totally different people off-mic. They play it up for the audience.

  2. I love the Celebrity Jeopardy formula, especially the ones with Norm Macdonald. I don't watch SNL these days, but every now and then a thumbnail on Youtube gets me. They revived Celebrity Jeopardy and it's still good.

  3. I think you're off with your assessment of this generation. Hear me out. I think that there are too many games. Many are good. Many are bad. Gamers are spoiled for choice. I think that leads some to delve into old game libraries. I think locked-in gamers want to disconnect from always-on and choose more "analog" (in quoutes) gaming with limited libraries. I've observed quite a rash of spending on old games during this global situation. The quote "free" money and free time mandated by the authorities is only fuel for the fire.

I wonder what will happen after things re-open and we can go to grocery stores without wearing paper-thin masks again. I think it's really odd. Suddenly it's five years ago, but the prices are even higher. Some top-end items haven't budged, but the low-end is soaring. Some interesting things I've noticed is the N64 is firing on all rockets after a steady decrease over the last two years during the time GameCube was building steam. Of course, GameCube is now chuga-chuga-choo-chooing along. The Sega Genesis (yep, Sega's Golden Boy!) is seeing new heights in the CIB stuff. I seriously thought the market didn't want Sega Genesis stuff. Even the 32X is riding a sun beam.

  4. What!? Balzak is trolling. Sonic Adventure can't be his favorite Sonic game. Look, we were all thrown for a loop by the whale and running down stone chutes in the hidden temple, but come on, Balzak; the twitchy controls and lack of control during sections of stages doesn't work for 3D Sonic. Fighting the camera leads to more pain. Further, whose bright idea was it to bring Sonic into the quote "real" world? Kids want Sonic as a friend. I get it. These relationships can't all be like Spike and Sparkplug from Transformers. I even have doubts how well that worked. It's been years since I watched the show. Gummy Bears is a better example, but that series started out with humans interacting with magical cartoony things. I'm fine with Sonic's world not being Earth.

There are many latter Sonic games which feel much better, although some still abandon the designs of 2D Sonic which worked so well. I know 3D Sonic can work. I haven't played through all 3D Sonics so maybe some have made improvements, but choosing any of the broken Sonic Adventure games is a waste. Sonic Adventure had some good ideas, but they're like hulls of undigested corn speckling a shit pile. OK, it's not that bad. It's just disappointing. It's not the 3D Sonic game we wanted back then, especially in no-nostalgia goggles retrospect.

Speaking of Sonic Adventure, that wrestler theme at the end reminds me of the Knuckles tracks that play in those games. There's just enough rap and just enough ridiculous angry talk.

  5. Regarding Shenmue 3, Balzak, I haven't gotten around to it. Why buy a game that I'm not immediately going to play? Well, I wanted to see that game get made so I chipped into the Kickstarter.

  6. BTW, if you ever get grabbed by the rip current, supposedly swimming parallel to the shoreline is the best strategy for not dying. You will get pushed out by the current, but eventually you'll pass the area, and the current's effects are not as strong, so you can swim back to shore. Remember, swim in the same direction as the shoreline, not toward it or away from it.

  7. I have some more hypotheses about the unfettered spending on retro.
Have releases dates of big modern games seen the same push as other forms of media? That could stir up some interest in old games.

Another hypothesis is that people feeling out-of-sorts may be seeking comfort in nostalgia.

  8. Also, Balzak, since you mention listening to the cast regularly, why no comment? Speak up. I know DA is the BA, but he is too humble to request comments. Write in and enhance DASS more often. The MCCU is holding on by a thread.

  9. Do I have any interest in Scoob and the Gang? Yea, but I have no interest in seeing that new movie. I'm with DA. The live action movies are totally overlooked. Surprisingly they were able to bring the series to the big screen intact while poking fun at itself. I used to watch the cartoon USA or some other network and enjoyed them. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I think I would still enjoy watching them today.
BTW, another overlooked realization of cartoon to live-action is the Speed Racer movie by the Wachoskis. I was so underwhelmed at the thought of Speed Racer being different going into that movie even though I may have seen only part of a trailer. Holy crap did they nail Speed Racer's look and feel, but update it! The actors knew what they were doing too. I think people panned it at the time which sours any talk of a sequel, but dang it deserves one. Mammoth train? Acrobatic team? That universe is filled with awesomeness.
A Lupin the Third movie by the Wachowskis would be sweet too.
